GUILLAUME SARDIN FOR CENTRAL DEPARTMENT STORE
I was invited by Central, one of Thailand largest retailer, to explore with my creolized approach the traditional tales of Sang Thong. Mixing French ballet, the beautiful XVIIIth century decorative art of Thailand with modern elements like neon signs, the six months collaboration took many forms : animated videos, printed shirts, storefront windows all over Thailand, and two 40m long facades on Bangkok’s busiest avenue.
.
My take on the story of Sang Thong, a drama filled folk tale with love is an hommage to Thai culture, from Ban Chiang ceramic to Ayutthaya art and architecture.
For a Thai New year shirt, I blended French Toile de Jouy and Thai Lackerwork. On Bangkok’s biggest shopping center, a facade pays hommage to Thailand theatre culture while incorporation the flashy neon signs of Yaowarat road. A XVIIIth Chinese silk fabric produce for the Thai market inspired a picnic blanket. The collaboration is a joyful dialogue between the past and the Present.
By telling the story of Sang Thong this time We will see Thai tales through the unique lines of Guillaume Sardin, which is a perfect blend of Eastern and Western art.
